Making Monopoly Star Wars, released worldwide September 4th 2015

Not such a long time ago, in a galaxy not far from Hayes...

As Brand Writer for the Design & Development team at Hasbro Gaming, I was challenged to unleash my Jedi copy skills upon a very special STAR WARS edition of the world's greatest board game. This was Hasbro's flagship gaming product for the year, released for the dawn of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and grossing nearly $7,000,000 in its first three months.

It was a fantastic opportunity to create engaging, funny and emotive wordplay across the entire product – combining two of the world's most recognised entertainment brands in a swirl of truly galactic gameplay.

This included:

  • Developing, testing and defining the words and layout of the game guide rules (scrolling yellow space paragraphs on the front, light blue end credit text on the back – naturally)
  • Writing engaging Chance card copy combining relevant actions with classic movie quotes
  • Creating the choicest call-outs on pack
  • Working within Disney's super strict style guide

I Sith you not, this product had it all. Except Rey, initially. But that was down to Disney.

Phil brought heaps of enthusiasm and energy to producing all copy elements needed for a complete product experience. Of note, is Monopoly Star Wars, where Phil did a stellar job using movie quotes and style. The Chance cards were bursting with Star Wars fun, whilst still keeping gameplay instructions clear.

The project was very demanding and Phil went above and beyond to research thoroughly, support the testing and made plenty of great suggestions, all to make a game that has fans of both Monopoly and Star Wars squealing with delight.

I have no hesitation in recommending Phil and wish him the best in any future adventures.

Phil is a hugely creative and inventive brand writer whose quick wit, pithy style and originality always ensured the highest level of execution for our branded copy on everything from product names and snappy strap lines to in-depth and complex game instructions.

I would highly recommend Phil – he’s a great team player who always delivers on brief and is highly enthusiastic and passionate about his craft – he would be a fantastic asset to any team!
